It is important to preserve the historical heritage. We are heading for Grodno – a large-scale reconstruction of the Old Castle is currently underway in the westernmost regional center of our country.

Grodno residents will not recognize the Old Castle anymore, so it has been transformed. Previously, it looked like a barracks, since after the third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, it belonged to the military for more than a century. Now we see it as it was created by King Stefan Batory in the 16th century, by the way, his favorite residence.

The restoration of the castle began about 5 years ago. The first stage of reconstruction – construction and installation work on the southern wall and in two towers, they are clearly visible from the bank of the Neman-is almost completed. The entrance gates have also acquired a historical appearance. By the end of the year, the project of the second stage of construction will appear – it includes the restoration of the palace and the wing on the opposite side, which is located closer to the city. The museum staff is already working on creating a future exhibition. Perhaps tourists will be able to get to the new Old Castle this summer. And there will be something to show – the collection of the historical and archaeological museum of 200 thousand objects is one of the largest in the country.

More than 3 thousand more were found during the reconstruction – weapons, household items, jewelry. For example, the rook of the XIV century is still considered the most valuable. The warriors of Vytautas the Great could play chess like this. Or more recently, in May, builders discovered fragments of the floor of the XVI century - there is the same one in the Nesvizh Church. A lot of reconstruction work is still ahead. Builders are not in a hurry, they take care of every inch of ancient architecture. Everyone understands that it is important to preserve all the most valuable things for future generations of independent Belarus.
