Where do you think you can go during the pandemic? Where to relax and have fun? I asked myself this question, and the answer came by itself. For how many years I have been living near the Grodno Zoo, I have been there a huge number of times, but when I grew up, I forgot the way there. And very in vain: after all, it is there that you can get relaxation for the soul! Acquaintance with the residents of the zoo for me took place in the company of the cultural organizer of the institution Olga Makarova.
Whose fur is more beautiful?
The other day I saw photos of new Zoo inhabitants on Instagram: a fawn, a East Caucasian tur and three charming South American coatis. So we immediately went to the deer enclosure. I was convinced that the little spotted fawn feels great: it eats twigs with leaves and kicks. And the hair of adult deer is very bright and shiny. Hmm, what influenced this? It turns out that the food. It is summer now, and the ungulates are pampered with vegetables, freshly mown grass and twigs with the leaves of fruit trees. And molting. The animals shed their old dull fur and dress up in bright summer ones. By the way, it's not just deer that are molting. I learned many fascinating stories. For example, camel's old hair can hang on its sides for a very long time with a not too attractive fringe. You can not remove it, since this process should occur naturally.

Unfortunately, we did not get to the coatis: "Babushkin Dvorik", the local petting zoo, does not work on Mondays. But I was assured that everything is fine with them, too. It's just a pity that after the summer they will be moved to another zoo.
With a python in her arms
The terrarium is very popular among zoo visitors. Especially children. And I liked one python, too. I asked to take a picture with him. This is a very unusual feeling when a rather heavy and cold scaly creature is lying on your hands. And goosebumps slowly creep over the body. M-yes, the rush of adrenaline with a vengeance!

I know that reptiles love warmth and are not averse to basking in the sun. I was wondering if the zoo workers "walk" them. Indeed, there is a whole fenced area for turtles, snakes and other reptiles, where they are taken out to warm their sides in the sun. It somehow reminded me of a kindergarten, because an employee – a "nanny" – looks after all this horde.
As I learned, this is not the only measure that helps animals feel comfortable on hot days: employees of the Zoo create a shade, swimming pools, animals are sprayed with a spray gun or watered with water from hoses.
Bears and tigers like to swim during the heat, and for maned sheeps in the middle of the enclosure there is a puddle in which they love to jump and splash merrily. In addition, the animals have access to internal rooms – "houses", where the temperature is slightly lower.

I wonder how the animals behave during heavy downpours? Maybe this is the same terrible problem for them as for people? As it turns out, no. For many animals, heavy rain is an occasion to have fun and play. For example, birds and hyenas, like children, jump merrily through puddles. Parrots get out of the houses during the rain and put their wings under the drops: the winged ones are in their natural element, like the rest of the zoo's inhabitants.
Turtle Racing
Good care and nutrition affect the life expectancy of animals. For example, in the wild, the emu lives from 10 to 20 years, and the zookeeper is already 27 years old. And there are a lot of such examples. Today, the Zoo has 13 species of animals from the Red Book. Employees treat them very carefully. It is good that visitors do not try to feed the animals at their own discretion, throwing them whatever they have. But so far, almost every monkey enclosure has candy wrappers and sweets lying around. Of course, it's funny to watch a monkey unwrap a candy. But monkeys, like humans, can have allergies, and they can bite your hand. Also, foundlings have become a huge problem now.
– Children should be explained that it is not necessary to grab the chicks and baby-animals as soon as their mother left them, and carry them to the zoo. You can deprive them of a normal life in nature or destroy an entire population. – Olga Anatolyevna said. — During excursions and holidays held by the Zoo, we tell visitors about it. In addition, it is now an administratively punishable offense. And if you decide that some animal needs help, you can contact the Inspectorate of natural resources and environmental protection. Its employees will come and figure out what to do in a particular situation.Holidays and entertainment events are held every weekend, so parents with children are very frequent guests at the zoo. And then the focus is on animals. The program consists of game, educational contests with various prizes and exciting excursions. With the help of a fairy-tale plot, children will learn interesting facts about animals and their lives.
Don't know about you, but I already want to come to the Zoo again. In addition, I have not visited all its inhabitants yet.
